Each course is taught by top educators and incorporates SOLARO, an advanced learning tool offering targeted practice questions and immediate feedback. Students will develop test-taking strategies, enhance time management skills, and receive focused support to close learning gaps—all essential for excelling in their diploma exams.
Overview
Grade 9 Math PAT: Patterns and Relations
In this section, students will explore algebraic expressions, equations, and patterns. They will practice identifying relationships and solving problems using algebraic techniques. The course provides practice questions to help students become familiar with the type of algebraic reasoning required on the PAT.
Grade 9 Math PAT: Number Sense and Operations
This section emphasizes a deep understanding of number sense, including operations with integers, fractions, decimals, and percentages. Students will engage in practice questions that mirror PAT-style problems and learn effective strategies for tackling numerical questions with accuracy and speed.

Courses are available in Mathematics 30-1, Mathematics 30-2, Chemistry 30, Biology 30, Physics 30, English 30-1, and Social Studies 30-1. Initially piloted in Alberta schools, these courses are delivered by top educators and leverage SOLARO—our robust learning and assessment platform, featuring content from The Key and SNAP resources.
Each course covers the curriculum, test-taking techniques, and time management strategies essential for success. Specific focus is given to graphing calculator usage for math courses and scientific literacy for science courses. Students gain instant feedback on practice tests, can engage from any device, and have the opportunity to ask questions for clarification—ensuring they are fully aligned with the Alberta Program of Studies and diploma exam requirements.
- Top Alberta educators deliver each course using engaging online instruction leveraging SOLARO, Castle Rock Research's online learning and assessment resource. SOLARO includes all content included in both The Key and SNAP resources.
- Course instructors have diploma exam item development and/or diploma marking experience as well as years of classroom experience.
- Each diploma course is 20 hours in length spread over five sessions. The Grade 9 Math PAT course is 20 hours in length spread over ten sessions.
- Courses include test-taking and time management strategies. Mathematics 30-1 and 30-2 courses include a section on graphing calculator strategies and usage.
- Students engage on their own devices, receive immediate feedback on practice tests and have ample opportunity to ask questions to clarify concepts.
- Each course will cover the content and skills outlined in the Alberta Program of Studies; the time allocated to each topic will directly align with the diploma examination emphasis for each topic.
- Course instructors are able to determine individual student strengths and learning gaps with formative assessments, creating individualized learning plans for each student. Students are provided an overview of strengths and learning gaps through summative assessments at the end of each unit.
